Seems likely to me that the Crary name came from the Irish name McCrary. A few Crary family members were found from Hyde County. A scattering of Crary's were also were found in Beaufort County.
Mrs Adeline Crary (Maiden name Smith) was the school teacher in the one room school house in Ponzer for many years. She also raised my Great Grandma Jenny, mother of my Grandaddy Fletcher Manning. It is very likely that she taught my grandparents to read, along with many others in Hyde County.
